Win a Bento USB Drive

Those of you that follow me on Twitter know that a few weeks ago someone sent me the link to the coolest thing I’d seen in just about forever: the Bento USB drive. Luckily, I was able to buy two before the drool shorted out my keyboard. They took a while to get here, but when they did I practically screamed like a little girl.

They’re only 2 gigs so they aren’t good for holding your collection of bento images for long, but really, WHO CARES?!! It’s a freaking USB drive with a tiny bento on it!! I don’t think I’ll even use mine, I just want to look at it and grin ear to ear.

Like I said, I bought two. One for me and one for one of you. To enter, simply comment on this blog post and tell me what bento tool you feel you can’t live without and why. Is it a nori punch? An onigiri mold? A simple toothpick? Scissors? Tell me all about it! I’ll accept entries until September 18th then pick a random winner from the bunch. The contest is open worldwide and I’m limiting it to one entry per person.

I should also mention that today is the official day that Kawaii Bento Boxes: Cute and Convenient Japanese Meals on the Gobecomes available for sale. You can read my review about it here. If you buy the book, be sure to post there and let me know what you think of it!

The tool I can’t live without is cute divider cups! Re-usable silicone come in awesome little shapes, and disposable wax paper have the cutest prints, and I dont have to worry about cleaning really messy food off of them!

    Divider cups are love!

I don’t use much in the name of supplies — we have to go pretty simple on our finances, so for me, the boxes are pretty important, particularly since they help with portions. I can generally do food categories on my own, but portions can be harder to figure.

Bento equipment I truly can’t live without?

I posed this question to my son, who rolled his eyes, and said, “Your BRAIN, Mama! You can’t make a bento without being creative.”

Okay, fair enough, but in the real world, a sharp knife, CLOSELY followed by cute two-tier boxes. LURVE them.

Hmm.. I thought about this for a while. It’s hard, because I love all my boxes with bento gear so much.

But one simple thing I keep returning to and which was among the very first things I ever bought is a set of two star shapes, a small and a larger one. I have several other star shapers by now, but these are … well.. cute! They have the same rounded shape as the stars in Super Mario. It’s hard to explain and it seems silly to call a star “cute” – but that is in fact what they are. Cute. As is this USB drive. It is pure awesomeness. I hope to win it of course, or else I’ll simply have to cave in and buy one of my own, because.. this is just something a true bento-holic MUST own ^_^

I definitely cannot live without an onigiri mold. I love onigiri but my hands can’t handle the heat when forming them without a mold. A mold is quick, easy, and convenient!

My favorite bento tool is a waffle bladed knife I bought for a few dollars at a kitchen supply store. The blade cuts ripple patterns on vegetables like cucumbers and carrots. They look cute without any significant effort.

The one tool I can’t do without is… my iphone. I put some bento inspirations on it (pictures taken from the net), so that I won’t be short on ideas as to how to arrange my food. Complete with recipe apps from various places, my iphone is… get a greasy indispensable little tool :)

well, one thing I cant live without is the internet, where I get such great ideas and reciipes! I would have never heard of bento without that!

I have a set of very small onigiri molds (a star, a bear face and a heart) that makes what I call “popcorn” oniigiri because they are about as big as a mouthful of popcorn. They are cute, easy to decorate, and since I have problems with my tummy and can’t eat a lot at one setting, a couple of them in my bento makes it cute and is just the right size for my appetite.

I know that official bento boxes are not required to make one, but I couldn’t live without mine! I love them all so much, and even though I have way more than I need, I always keep buying more! Each box is so cute, I just can’t resist them.

That USB is so cute! I can’t live without the dividers. Food tastes so much better when it tastes like the food it is, rather than what it’s touching. Did that make sense? It’s like going to a deli and having everything taste like the pickle they put next to everything…

Wow, what a tough question! I have two plastic shoeboxes and an old floppy disk box that hold the bento gear that is used too regularly to be put in the 3 drawer unit in the hall closet that are filled w/ cutters, egg molds, good cups and dividers etc.

I guess I’d have to go with the egg molds – Hubby wants salads every day pretty much and they give me something cute to add to it and make a chef’s salad – I have been enamored with the egg molds since day 1 :D Then again I do love my flower veggie cutters too… Oh so hard – can I say both?! lol

OK, ok, I’m sticking with the egg molds…

I can’t live without a (cookie?)cutter of any shape. I don’t know why, but as long as I see my bento filled with little star carrots or heart shapped kiwis rather than just a plain bento..I guess it just brightens my day alittle. :D

Best bento tool is lettuce. Simple lettuce leaves aren’t tools, but you and I both know that it is the greatest thing to bento since onigiri. It brightens up a box, it acts as awesome filler, and you can eat it. :)

Btw, my usb drive is in the shape of ikura nigiri. :) But this bento one is WAAAAAY cooler.

Right you are, wiggling that usb-drive in front of our noses.. LOL It’s really very kind of you!

The tool I can’t do without sounds a bit dull: just some nice small (closable!) containers for dressing, dip, dried herbs & spices, nuts and stuff. I had to do without them for a long time and that was no fun.

Also, not a tool BUT very important is the motivation provided by a community! Friends & family IRL and on the web LOL Last year I stopped making bento’s for months because I felt very lonely in the bento department. Not anymore though! :)

My favorite tool would have to be my plastic wrap from Ichiban Kan ( ;_; ). I can wrap individual portions of warm rice in it, freeze it, and pop a serving in the microwave when I need it. Supposedly, the plastic wrap doesn’t leak any chemicals when heated, so that makes me feel better. The rice comes out perfect every time! And, since I can’t get it online anymore, it’s even more precious to me!

At the risk of sounding boring, the one thing I can’t live without (literally) for my bentos is not a tool, but a nutrient — Protein, my favorite form being eggs. I have severe hypoglycemia, and eggs have been my favorite food ever since I was young.

A few years back I was in a Japanese immersion program in Monterey, CA. I wanted to start making bentos for myself after I left my Japanese home, mother and brother. My Japanese mom knew about my low blood sugar and she always made dishes with eggs every day.

Ever since I started making bentos for myself I’m able to have eggs in all kinds of forms every day. I have a great and beautiful reminder of how wonderful she was to me, and I can always have that slow-burning protein pick-me-up to get me through the long afternoons at work.

That is a hard one!! But a sharp knife springs to mind and my two-tier bentoboxes!! I cannot live without them :)

@The USB, it is extremely cute!!!

((Wow, that USB is EPIC. O.O))

I’d probably say that I couldn’t survive making onigiri without my little onigiri maker. We found it in a box in the basement, and Mum didn’t even know what it was at first! I immediately freaked out in joy, though.

Definitely a good knife and a cutting board too. No idea what I’d do without those.

for me, it’s the box itself. if I don’t have super cute matching pink boxes, it’s not nearly as fun! :)

Boring answer, but I have to go with what some others have said… a really SHARP paring knife. Also, my little sauce bottles with snap-close tops because they stay tight closed without leaking.

chopsticks. they’re so much easier to maneuver than a fork for delicately placing/rotating items in a bento bento box. western utensils can be so clumsy!

I don’t have much, so my must-have would be the bento dividers, to prevent all my flavors from mixing!

Onigiri mold! That makes bento making easy even if all you have is just rice and furikake.

I’ve just started making these. I love my egg molds and am just trying to build up a collection. I found some pre-punched nori (pokemon shaped) at the Asian grocery store. I can’t wait to see the look on my kids faces!

I know this sounds boring, but the most important tool for making a bento for me is a good paring knife. With a good knife you can pretty much pull off everything: trim things down to fit, cut food into nice shapes, peel veggies…you name it.

It is boring – but my Lock & Lock boxes. I use these 90% of the time so I can throw lunch in my backpack and not worry about leaking. I love my cute traditional bento boxes, but they rarely get used anymore!

I taught in Japan more than ten years ago, and bought a gingko at the Aritsugu knife store in Kyoto. Not a gourd or a maple leaf, but a gingko. It took about a year of visiting to make sure I was picking the right one, and a couple more months before I finally gave in and bought the thing. And now I take such pleasure in it, every day, for years!

My favorite bento tool is simple. Patty pans, or a normal people call them, paper muffin cases. They transform a neat bento box into a colorful eyefeast. (Incidently, that should be a word. Doesn’t it sound delicious?)

I buy beautifully colored, striped or spotted patty pans, fill them up with my little clumps of which ever food I am cooking.

Incidentally, I have seen a similar USB drive. (Well, not similar at all but…) this one connects to a little pot so that you can…*drumroll*…warm up your lunch via your computer.

Rendered useless by a microwave but, c’mon, it connects to your computer via USB. Who wouldn’t buy it?

I am sort of a begginer, so I don’t have that many bento items. So, I have to be creative. I really love dollar store cookie cutters. I got Halloween shaps last week.
    That usb is adorable!

I love that bento USB stick! If it had bigger memory, I would buy whether I won or not.
    So, here’s my entry…
The bento item I CANNOT live without is my nori-punch collection. Most of the time I don’t have time to construct elaborate bentos, and a nori-punched expression really brightens up a lunch item. Also, I quite often use them to express my mood on that day, or cheer me up. Who wouldn’t be cheered up by a smiling onigiri when they’re down?

I’m fairly new to bento, so I haven’t had a chance to test out a lot of tools, but the simple onigiri molds have probably been the best thing I came across. I tried making a standard oval onigiri without a mold – an effort which consisted of me jumping around as I burned my hands, running to the sink to wash off all the rice that stuck to me – then saying a few unladylike things when the rice wouldn’t stick to itself, and . . . you get the idea. I did finally make a passable froggie onigiri, but YAY onigiri molds!

My favorite tool is teh interwebs…as it were. Sometimes I come up a little shallow in the creativity department, (which is weird for an art major) and I need some creative input. Some of the stuff you guys come up with though is so damn cute and creative I just have to kick myself and say, “Why didn’t I think of that?!”

OMG! That USB is just too cool!

Hmmm, what tool do I really need…
I’d have to say my potato knife (actually I have about 6 of these, for when 5 end up in the dishwasher at the same time). I make practical rather than pretty bentos, so getting my food to fit in my box is a big requirement. I do tend to try and cut decoratively, bit sometimes I just can’t bothered and plunk everything in…

I love this little USB card with the bento on it! I saw it somewhere else, too, and thought it was too cute. Now I have a chance to WIN one… yipee!

The tool I can’t do without right now is my little star-shaped veggie cutter. A carrot star here or there really spruces up a boring bento… lol.

i second Bhevarri’s thought on the silicone molds, but i really get a lot of use out of the egg molds and 5-compartment sushi molds. i love how the sushi molds don’t crush the rice or smush the grains together.
