Girl’s Day Contest Winners and Bento

My kids have entered that period of their lives that I think all Hawaii kids go through at some point: The Lava Era. I’ll be shopping for food with them when suddenly one of them will shriek, “MOMMY! DON’T STEP ON THE GREEN SQUARES, THAT’S LAVA!!!!!!!” Or we’ll be in the parking lot and suddenly everything I’m standing in turns to lava. Most times I just go with it and hop around like my feet are on fire, other times when I don’t care I’m just like, “I like walking on lava.” It’s become an obsession with them now and everywhere I go, I’m suddenly walking on lava.

The funniest part came this weekend when they were watching Planet Earth with Mr. Pikko and some lava came on screen.

Baby Girl: “What’s that?”
Daddy: “It’s lava.”
Baby Girl: “Oh!”

Oh, kids. LOL!

Girl's Day Bento

Last week I did a bento using some of my scrapbooking stuff and this week I continue with that by using an old rubber stamp I had to make a Girl’s Day bento. So, if you’re like me and have not only lots of papers, magazines, and other supplies, but rubber stamps as well, then you might want to try digging them out again!

I got this stamp at a local stamping fair years ago and it’s always been one of my favorites for its cute factor. I have a sakura stamp that makes a great background for it too, especially with embossing.

Girl's Day Stamp

I stamped two images on a piece of paper. I used the lighter one to cut out the hair from nori, the kimono from yellow soy paper, and the shoes from nori. I cut the darker one out whole to cut out the cheese.

Girl's Day Stamp

As usual, I cut the girl out from the cheese with a toothpick. The lines on the stamp weren’t going to be on the paper, so what I did was I took another toothpick, put a drop of black food coloring onto a spoon, and painted right onto the cheese. The dark lines went through the soy paper to reveal a “drawing” of sorts. It didn’t come out as good as I wanted it to as I had to do it freehand, but you get the intended effect. I didn’t have the guts to try the flowers. Maybe I can try to find edible ink and just stamp cheese. LOL!

Cute Kimono Girl Bento

Here’s a close-up of the girl. Her face came out pretty good, but I totally messed up the bottom of her kimono. It will definitely take more practice! She’s resting on a pink flower onigiri colored with the pink ume powder I’m giving away today. On the sides I have broccoli, tamagoyaki, a sliced cherry tomato, asparagus, and some bite size pieces of Pari-Pari Style Chicken, which I made for dinner last night from Harumi’s Japanese Home Cooking: Simple, Elegant Recipes for Contemporary Tastes. It turned out a bit dry because I used boneless chicken instead of skin-on like in the recipe, but taste wise it was good, especially since Buddy asked for seconds!

Now, on to the contest winners. I accepted a total of 61 entries and today did a random draw of numbers to get my five winners:

Congrats to the winners! I’ll be emailing this afternoon, so please reply quickly!

I’m pretty sure the “Hot Lava” thing happens everywhere.

I remember doing it as a kid, and a lot of kids do it here in Minneapolis too.

Yup, we played it in Wisconsin. What with all the cartoons and everything depicting lava, I think kids all over get the idea eventually.

You live in Hawaii and your kids’ have never seen the lava fields? That’s OK… I’ve lived in Texas all my life and have only seen a handful of the sights here. But I did see the lava fields of New Mexico once. Your artwork is getting better all the time. I do believe you can buy dry stamp pads and wet them with food color to use your rubber stamps on.

We live on Oahu, there aren’t any here!

Great idea about just using food coloring as ink!!

In the absence of dry stamp pads, you could always dedicate a brand new, simple sponge to the purpose.

LOL I think the hot lava game is everywhere, I played it as a UT kid, and my kids have come up with it too! We also pretended there was water with sharks in it.
    Congrats to the winners!

I think you could stamp cheese with food colouring for chocolate making – it’s usually flavourless and made specially to stick to a greasy surface. It’s pretty expensive though.

Oh you mean the coloring to color chocolate? Hmm, maybe I could look at the fondant coloring too.

Adorable girl! I do hope someone will invent the edible ink and food stamp with a lot of cute characters. That will be nice and save us a lot of jobs LOL :D

I know, right? Just give me some edible black ink so I don’t have to cut so much nori already! lol

Kids here in Florida do the same thing. I work in an elementary school and they have different color tiles that make up a tiger face in the large lobby. We see kids walking through going to the media center,or science lab, hopping, and jumping across certain colors. They say the same thing,”careful the orange is hot lava”. It’s so funny that you mentioned the it!

You always come up with such cute ideas! Of course that’s why you were in the news paper! Lol! Congrats to the winners!

I wonder if you could just paint the stamp with food coloring and stamp the cheese that way. Either way you did an amazing job as always!

I think lava is an all children thing. My son used to do the same thing and we definitely don’t have lava anywhere near us :D

They make edible ink pens for cookie decorating. You could use those to ink your stamps.

And yes, I too live on Oahu and have perished several times in the the hot lava that pops up in Costco!

I can’t believe I didn’t think of that. I have some pens already, but they really suck. :( They dry up so fast. Though, maybe I can re-ink them myself?

I get more lava at Foodland than Costco, haha!

Haha! We used to play the “Step on a crack, break your mother’s back!” Cracked us up, too (pardon the pun). I love the “Lava!” Far more creative than we were! The tribute to Girl’s Day is wonderful! I love it! I have a million stamps, I used to sell Stampin’ Up! Now I can pull them out and use them for something other than cards and scrapbooking… thanks for the idea!

Congratulations to everyone that won the Ume powder! Lucky, lucky!

We TOTALLY played lava when we were kids. My husband and his sister played it too.

We also played “death car” or some such nonsense… where if a car drove by when you were playing outside you had to run and hide. If it “saw” you then you were dead. I dunno… the midwest (south-central Indiana) is a boring place I guess!

Pikko, if you look in the baking aisle at the regular grocery store, they have edible ink pens by the birthday candles and tubes of icing. :) it comes in a four pack- yellow, green, blue, and red.
