First 2013 Bento

Yeah, I hate myself. I did it again last month where I said I’d do something, then didn’t. So one of my 2013 resolutions will be to never blog and say I’ll be posting something because somehow that immediately curses my schedule and makes it impossible.

As you guys must know, January is the time when everyone swears they’ll start losing weight, including me. I’ve got a few events coming up this year that make me want to lose about 25 pounds, but I haven’t yet re-subbed to Weight Watchers because for the past two years I’ve signed up but never really stuck to it since that first run. If you want to give it a try though, WW has launched their new 360 program and they’ve waived the online signup fee. I definitely need people to diet with, so if you sign up or do it some other way, please let me know as I’d love to hear what your plan is!

As for me, I’ll be going a simple route by eating smarter and exercising regularly. Part of that includes getting back into bentoing to control my portions. Here’s the first bento of the year that I made for last Friday.

First 2013 Bento

In it, I’ve got New Year’s leftovers including chopped up grilled shrimp, pickles, fresh tomatoes I picked from Mr. Pikko’s garden, rice, and the last of my ozoni. I didn’t actually put the ozoni in the box, but I photoed it in the bowl to show you guys how I ate it later in the day.

I heated up the soup in a pot on the stove, cooking the mochi in it since my mochi was already hard as a rock. After it was good and boiling hot, I ladled it into my Zojirushi Food Jar. I figured boiling hot meant it would still be nice and warm by the time lunch came around, but I was actually quite shocked to find that even 5 hours later, the soup was piping hot! Not scalding, mind you, but really hot. I was so amazed and thankful because I’m the kind of person that likes her soup really temperature hot.

I’m out of purple pickles, so I’ll have to make a trip to Marukai to get more. How was everyone’s New Year’s celebration? Don’t forget to tell me your weight loss plans for the year!

I’m trying to lose weight this year too. I was the same way with Weight Watchers–I kept paying for my membership even though the plan wasn’t really working for me anymore. So now I’m counting calories and trying that intermittent fasting thing (eating only during 8 hours of the day–okay, it sounds nuts, but a friend of mine swears by it). And then I decided to start rowing because it’s both cardio and strength. Let’s hope we can both stick to our diets this time–Happy New Year! :)

I use SparkPeople for food and exercise tracking – it’s got a decent app, and lets you follow whatever nutritional plan you like.

I’ve tried SparkPeople, but since I live in Hawaii, too many foods aren’t listed and I found it frustrating. :( I’m going to just try to be smart and do it on my own!

Such a lovely first bento! And yeah, I know the curse of promising to post something… I should start saying that about things I DON’T want to post, since then it’ll never happen! Best of luck on your New Year’s goals!

Thanks Megg, both for the New Year’s wishes and for assuring me I’m not the only one who fails at blog promises. lol

I use weight loss hypnosis (which I do once a year for 4 hours–2 hours in the first session and 2 hours in the second session the next week, and then follow up by listening to the accompanying CD whenever I can) to hypnotize me to eat smaller portions/drink more water/crave healthier foods/desire to work out. I also try to do zumba or yoga 2-3 times a week. Instead of dieting and trying to avoid certain foods, I eat anything I want, but in moderation. I don’t believe in dieting because it causes cravings because I am denying yourself.

I started doing this two years ago, and I lost 17 lbs (from Feb. to Sept.) I took a break during the Fall/Winter and gained back 8 lbs.

Last year, I did this again and lost 14 lbs (from Mar. to Aug.) I again took a break from Fall until now, and gained back 5 lbs.

So now I’m going back to hypnosis this week and back to working out, and I hope to lose 10 lbs before a trip to Japan in early May. (I want to be in shape when I’m naked in the onsen with my tour group of fellow nikkei.)

If I lose 10 lbs this year, I will be back to my high school weight. I will probably take the Fall/Winter off again, and will be happy if I don’t gain more than 5 lbs back.

Each year, I’ve been gradually getting down to a new lowest weight and gaining less weight back (keeping more weight off.)

Hypnosis is not for everyone, and it works best if you listen to the CD at least once a day. I have a very suggestible mind, so it works well for me.

Good luck to us with our 2013 weight loss goals!
