Meat Loaf Bento (317)

This morning I was woken up at around 5:20 by the sound of my cell ringing. It was my Tarutaru ringtone, so by the time I’d stumbled over to my purse, I realized it was either Erika or my aunty calling. It turned out to be the latter. I ended up missing her call, but she had already left a text message and voicemail by the time I fished it out. She was frantically trying to reach me because she saw my Lost bento on the morning news. I’d sent it to them on Twitter and they expressed interest, but I hadn’t heard anything more so I wasn’t aware it would be on today. Thanks to Aunty C’s warning, I was able to record their little blurb about it on the TiVo. Mr. Pikko cut it up for me this morning and I uploaded it to YouTube for you all to cackle at. Or oooh at. I know my mom will cackle.

Although it’s been really exciting to get so many great links, I have to admit I’m a bit relieved to return to a much simpler bento today. Grandma J made this for dinner last night and I took one slice for gobbling up today.

Under this cut you’ll find LOSTspoilers, so if you haven’t yet watched last night, I suggest you stop reading after my bentorial.

In bento goodies news, Amazon has the Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless-Steel lined Lunch Jaron sale for $37.99. This lunch jar is normally 45-55 dollars, so if you’ve ever wanted one, now is a great time to snag one at a discounted price!

This one took me about 15 minutes to put together, not counting rice cooking time. I’d been distracted watching the news for the bento so I didn’t get started until a few minutes after 7. I finished photos by 7:20, so this was nice and painless.

Meat Loaf Bento 2

I’m not sure what I did to the top two images to make them look like that, but talk about ugh! Yesterday I bought Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography Books, Volumes 1 and 2 so that I can start learning a bit more about taking photos as I begin shopping for a DSLR. People have been recommending the Nikon D40but have also said if I don’t know how to use it, there’s not much sense in getting it. Me being the ultimate impulsive shopper though, I know I’ll probably end up getting one before I get through half of one book. I mean, I still haven’t read my TZ5instruction manual. Haha!

Anyway, the first thing I did was to add a small piece of foil to the bottom of the side section to catch any mango juice. Next, I added some rice. I spread some ketchup on top of the meat loaf. The slice was rather “tall” so I cut it in half and put the top half in straight, then cut the bottom part in half and put it down inside next to the ketchup slice. I then laid some garlic asparagus spears on top of the meat loaf to cover it up, alternating the spear points for a better look. Green beans would make a great substitute here.

Finally, I added one strawberry and some mango flowers with the centers punched out with a straw. The aluminum foil was still visible in between the cracks, so I added little sprigs of parsley in between. Finally, I added a bell pepper sauce bottle filled with ketchup and a nori flower. This was really hard to fill with a thick sauce since the opening was so small, so I don’t even know if I filled it all the way up. Next time I’ll have to choose a better bottle.

Okay, so Lost (SPOILERS!). Mr. Pikko really didn’t like last night’s episode, being driven mad by the whole “going backwards to show old stuff” kind of episode. He prefers things that advance the storyline at a fast pace, which is probably why Battlestar Galacticais the only show we both go nuts over on Fridays. Battlestar Galactica is going so fast I feel like my eyes can’t watch fast enough. As for myself, while I did like last night’s episode, it wasn’t one of my favorites. The Constant is still by far my favorite. I love Locke episodes though, so there wasn’t that much that could go wrong in my opinion. I loved the part where he’s eating the mango. I wanted to steal it.

Unfortunately, we both knew what was coming at the end. Last week’s scenes had showed Ben with Locke and while watching him talk him down, one had to assume that if Locke wasn’t really going to kill himself, then well gee, this really sinister dude is in the room with him. How else can Locke die?! It seems my Creepy Bento is now an Evil Mofo Bento. The one thing that surprised me was the death of Mr. Oceanic or Abbadon, whatever. Fringe guy. I really wasn’t expecting that.

Mr. Pikko pointed out the cemetary on Nuuanu, (which I think I was just at a few weeks ago) but when Locke finally crashed there was a flash of Waterfront Tower which made for some rather strange TV viewing since the two locations aren’t near each other.

I’m not sure if I’ll do another Lost bento next week. It’s hard to top yesterday’s since people seemed to go nuts over the rice plane. I have an idea for an older season bento, but we’ll see.
