Ichiben Review

Posted by on Jun 9, 2009 in Restaurants | 10 comments

When we went to eat at Spicy Ahi last week, we saw a place with a big NOW OPEN sign and much to my delight, it was a ramen shop called Ichiben. There was a woman outside handing out flyers, so I took one and we decided we’d eat there the next day for dinner. Ichiben offers four types of food: ramen, fried rice, grilled meats, and curry. They offer side orders, mini versions, and appetizers. Their Ichiben story was kinda cute and being new, the place was immaculate. Sadly enough, this place was a sore disappointment for me. I made the mistake of reading through the whole menu for Baby Girl and she ended up making me order her Spam Katsu, which is yummy and all, but really unhealthy for obvious reasons. Not only that, but who the...

This morning when I looked in my pantry, I discovered five boxes of Macaroni and Cheese that expired in February, so I decided I better get started on eating it up now.

Good Friday Bentos, Rain, and a New Camera!

Posted by on Apr 10, 2009 in Bento, Restaurants | 9 comments

Since today is one of our holidays, we got to spend the day at home with the kids. Grandpa and Grandma J had my niece and nephew, so we planned an outing. Grandma J had heard about these really good bentos from Makino Chaya, so she offered to buy lunch and we ended up meeting them at a park. Figuring this would be a great chance to try out my new camera, I brought it along. Just look at that gorgeous thing! It’s monstrous! I think it was around 9 x 13″. NOT kidding! It was full of yummy food and the most shocking part of it was the price. This bento cost a mind-boggling $5.50. I’ve seen dinkier bentos sell for at least 7 bucks or more and this thing had salmon and katsu and shrimp. To give...

Y’s Lunch Shop Bento (295)

Posted by on Jan 27, 2009 in Bento, hilo, Restaurants | 6 comments

Only three days left to enter my 200k Bento Contest! Also, you can now subscribe to my blog posts by email! See the link in the sidebar. –> As mentioned yesterday, I had food delivered from the okazuya from heaven, Y’s Lunch Shop. I did a Google search for the place and was rather shocked to find that out of the dozens of sites listing where Y’s is located, only one had a review. However, I cannot give this one reviewer any credit because he says he went to Y’s and didn’t buy anything. He LOOKED at the food and bought nothing. PFFT! Who does that? If I had just come from a 7 course banquet I’d have bought a fried fish or piece of egg. There are all kinds of nutty people in the world. It’s possible there...

Hilo Trip

Posted by on Jan 26, 2009 in hilo, life, Restaurants | 11 comments

If you’re following me on Twitter, you probably already know that I went to Hilo this past weekend with Baby Girl to attend my uncle’s funeral. It wasn’t a happy reason to go home, but a lot of happy memories came out of the trip, which was a really good thing. Aside from spending some nice, quality time with Grandma Mu (who I hadn’t seen in a whole year), I got to see a ton of Big Island family and friends. Oddly enough, I even met three blog readers at the funeral. I totally wasn’t expecting it and it cracked me up. It felt nice, too. ^_^ The strangest part about taking trips home to Hilo only once or twice a year is that you begin to notice just how much the place doesn’t change. Seriously, it was like...

Shrimp & Egg Patties (283)

Christmas in 2008 was very good to me bento-wise. All three of my gifts were bento items! Mr. Pikko and the kiddies got me a Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless-Steel lined Lunch Jar, Silver, which I’ve wanted for forever. Elmer from was in a store in Japan when he saw a bento book, which he then bought and sent to me for Christmas! I’ll have to go hunt down the URL later on Amazon Japan. I still can’t believe he sent me the book. It’s gorgeous! Last of all, I got from my Allakhazam Secret Santa one of the pretty bento boxes on my J-List wishlist! This is the box I’ve used for today’s lunch. One thing I really love to buy and then never use is cookbooks, so one of my New Year’s resolutions is to actually USE...

Black Friday

Posted by on Dec 30, 2008 in Restaurants | 2 comments

With Barack Obama and family on vacation here on Oahu, I’m sure many of you heard about the island-wide Oahu blackout we had last week Friday. Me and my brother pitched in to bring my mom home from Vegas for the Christmas week, so my in-laws cooked her a nice Christmas dinner. Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware that they had done this and had thought that her eating with us on Christmas Eve was the dinner I was asking to bring her to. I arranged for my brother to pick her up Christmas day before he went to work. Oops… So anyway, with that a wash, they invited her to go out to dinner. Since Baby Girl had come down with a fever on Christmas Day and Mr. Pikko was feeling under the weather, me and Buddy headed out to...

Hamburger Teddies (262)

I know I’ve let you guys down again this week, but I’ve got stuff to make up for it! 😀 First up though, I have some Yakiniku Million pictures that I never did blog about. This is what the front of the restaurant looks like. The whole time I was in college I had no idea what the front looked like simply because it was such a dumpy, disgusting neighborhood that we dared only to park in the back, eat, and then leave. Now though, WalMart has moved in nearby, the sidewalks look new, and there’s grass! Millions serves the fancier Korean sides, which I’m not all that big on. I prefer the take-out kind with bean sprouts namul, choi sum, taegu, and cabbage! I tried a Bud Light Lime and liked it, though Mr. Pikko said it tasted...
